@ianb Since Peter Thiel is on record saying that cults are the best form of business organization, I'm not surprised that tech companies are becoming even more cultist.

@emma It’s part of the Heroic Founder myth. See also DHH’s nonsense about benevolent dictator for life being the best model for open source.

@ianb Fucking hell. This went from a maybe-reasonable discussion/argument about building a business off the back of open-source without contributing back towards open-source into a North Korea situation.

@rhysmorgan @ianb non-conformists will be sent to the WordCamps

@ianb
Dave, why are you trying to open the AirPod bay doors?

@ianb Also this violates so many regulations in terms of privacy, data protection and ITsec that even the demand would likely fulfill the criteria for extortion in any reasonable juristiction.

@kkarhan @ianb It does place the Australian volunteers in a tricky position with respect to the Privacy Act. Just because you give your name to Bandcamp (Aus) doesn't mean that Wordpress (US) get access unless that was disclosed when first handing over your PII to Bandcamp (Aus).

So I think if the volunteers seek legal advice then they will say "no". And this is very much a situation where legal advice is needed.

@glent @ianb I'd just flatout refuse to do so as an act of self- and mutual defense, cuz that's a line not to be crossed - period!

  • The only case where I'd divulge info would be in the case of running a business and getting a duely warrant served with a judge's signature.

The sheer request for said info (under threat of refusal to entry) is extortion if nit disctimination.
